Simatai Wall
Simatai is located in the north of Miyun County, 140 km northeast of Beijing, holds the access to Gubeikou, a strategic pass in the eastern part of the Great Wall. After over three years’closure since June 17, 2010, Simatai Great Wall is officially re-opened starting from October 01, 2014 with an amazing water town in the area, people can hike 10 towers in the east section of Simatai Great Wall and the west 12 towers are still forbidden to hike. Unfortunately, it is said that the stretch from Jinshanling to Simatai is still closed. When the cross hike will be open is still unknown.
Originally, it was built during the Northern Qi Dynasty (550–577) and rebuilt in the Hongwu years of the MIng Dynasty, Simatai Great Wall is 5.4 km long with 35 beacon towers. This section of the Great Wall incorporated the different characteristics of each section of the Great Wall. A specialist on the Great Wall, Professor Luo Zhewen, has said “The Great Wall is the best of the Chinese buildings, and Simatai is the best of the Great Wall.” and is well known for its steepness.
